Docx-converter
The Docx-converter Dashboard Widget allows you to convert Office 2007 Open office XML Format files (.docx) right from your Desktop. Simply drag the .docx file you want to convert into the drop area of the widget (click to drag, push F12, drop) and the widget will automatically convert the file and save it to the location of the original file (with a .htm extension) and (optionally) open it in your web browser.
Docx-converter.com offers a portable solution for your compatability needs. It will convert a Microsoft Office .docx file into a simple html file. It strips out some of the formatting, but now supports bold, italic, and underlined text. Left, right, center, and justified alignment. Unicode characters. Tables. And more!
UPDATE May 2008: This product is not currently working, but, when it does will upload your file to the remote server to do the conversion. As far as I can see on the site, there is no mention of this privacy concern. Perhaps I am a bit paranoid, but I feel it worth warning potential users of what this software does. Please use at your own risk.
The widget version would appear to only convert to HTML, when the online form gives you options to convert this file to many version.
Apple’s own ‘Pages’ and TextEdit will open a .docx file without issues, making this service unnecessary for those with Pages

i have downloaded the software from the above site but its not functioning, dont know why. there is no exe file or something like that, can any one help me out.
I am guessing you are on Windows. The widget is for Mac only, but there is an online converter for Windows users here: http://www.docx-converter.com/
following message when opening docx-html file that was converted with docx converter widget.
Not Found
The requested URL /convert-upload.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

As Susan points out this app does not work as expected. I have updated the post to include a warning about possible privacy issues with this widget, and to point out that Apple’s Pages application can easily open a .docx file, and Apple’s Numbers will open a xlsx file without trouble. To me, that makes this widget repetitive.
Last note on this widget. For whatever reason it was occupying 75%-95% of my CPU while installed. Finally figured out why my machine was so slow, remove the widget, and now have a happy machine again.
I cannot recommend this widget for any reason.
This product doesn’t work and I can’t remove it from my machine! I now have 3 copies of it on my desktop that I can’t delete. When I try to delete from the trash it says “The operation cannot be completed because the item “images” is in use.” Can anyone help me get rid of this? I’m using an intel mac OS 10.5.2. I rebooted, but no help
Thanks!
And another problem with this app, geesh. Since it is a widget you should try removing it from the widgets folder in either /Library/widgets or /Users/{your username}/Library/widgets. Then you should be able to empty the trash. If you continue to have issues with getting rid of it, hop over to the forums.macosxhints.com and see if there is someone who can offer additional help.
Perhaps I should have a section on this site for apps that people should stay away from!
