Many Tricks releases version 2.0 of Leech, the ultimate download assistant

Leech 2.0 adds multi-file downloading, site and file exclusions, and more

Portland, Oregon (March 31, 2010) – Many Tricks, makers of helpful apps, today released version 2.0 of Leech, an essential download management program. While every browser has a built-in download tool, Leech provides a stable, always-there solution for users who download lots of files. Leech 2.0 is priced at $14, while upgrades from version 1.x are only $5. The program is available now at http://manytricks.com/leech/.

Leech is a download manager that works with any browser; it can fully integrate with Safari, Camino, OmniWeb, and Firefox, and can be used via drag-and-drop with other browsers it doesn’t directly support. In fully integrated mode, Leech automatically intercepts and manages download requests without requiring any user intervention.

Leech 2 has a number of new features that make it the ideal tool for high-volume downloaders, including full integration with 64-bit Safari in Mac OS X 10.6. Users can also select entries in Leech’s downloads list; once selected, users can use a contextual menu to move, pause, queue, or remove one or more downloads. Users can even double-click an active download to open that download’s containing folder in the Finder.

Users can also specify domains and file extensions that Leech will not intercept when it’s operating in integrated browser mode. So if, for example, a user wants Safari to always handle disk image (.DMG) file downloads, Leech makes it simple to do.

Leech 2 also supports ranges in URLs to download a series of related files. For instance, entering a URL that ends in ‘somefile_{1-5}.txt’ will attempt to download ‘somefile1.txt,’ ‘somefile2.txt,’ ‘somefile3.txt,’ etc. from the specified site. Both numeric and alpha ranges are supported.

Finally, Leech 2 includes Sparkle support, so future updates can be done directly within the program.

Beyond the new stuff, Leech 2 still offers the strong feature set of its predecessor:

    • Keeps a permanent record of all downloads in a searchable history file
    • Accepts drag-and-drop lists of URLs
    • Supports rules for routing downloads based on host and file type
    • Allows users to limit the number of concurrent downloads
    • Mark URLs for future downloading
    • Can automatically shut down a user’s Mac after completing its download tasks
